Criminal Justice Program Overview

The Industry Recognized Credential (IRC) Testing initiated in 2017 by the Missouri Peace Officers Association, in partnership with the Missouri Career Technical Sciences Program, is a significant step in professionalizing and standardizing the training for students in the Missouri Secondary Criminal Justice Program. This program assesses students in several critical areas relevant to law enforcement and criminal justice, including:

  • Job Interview

Evaluates a student's ability to present themselves professionally and articulate their qualifications and interest in a law enforcement career.

  • Crime Scene Investigation

Tests practical skills in crime scenes, from securing it to collecting and analyzing evidence.

  • Writing Exercises

Assesses reading comprehension and the ability to analyze current police topics, requiring students to articulate their understanding and perspective in writing.

  • Analyzing Graphs and Communicating Trends

Focuses on the ability to interpret data and communicate findings, a skill important for understanding crime trends and informing policing strategies.

  • Mock Traffic Stop

Provides a hands-on scenario to assess a student’s ability to apply legal knowledge, interpersonal skills, and procedure during a routine traffic stop.

Students who pass these assessments demonstrate competency in core skills and knowledge areas that are essential for a career in law enforcement or related criminal justice career. This credential is an important validation of their skills and a stepping stone to entering the law enforcement field.
